The Committee to combat Torture has observed that lawyers are not often present at police interrogations, yet it is provided for by law.
The Permanent Representative of Cameroon to the United Nations in Geneva, Anatole Fabien Marie Nkou, and a delegation composed of representatives of the Ministries of external Relations and Justice, as well as the general delegation of national security and of the national gendarmerie were facing the United Nations Committee on Torture (UN) on 8 November 2017.

They answered questions from the Committee’s experts on the crisis in the English-speaking Regions; Allegations of summary executions and existence of secret places of detention and mass graves, in particular in the context of counter-terrorism against Boko Haram; Military courts, The criminalisation of torture and the notion of “legitimate sanctions”; Prison conditions, Gender based violence, Female genital mutilation; The repeal of the provision of the penal Code exempting from criminal proceedings the perpetrator of a rape that marries the victim; The situation of human rights defenders; Freedom of the Press “or the national Commission on human rights and freedoms” underlines the report of the Committee published on 9 November 2017.
In studying the report of Cameroon, the United Nations experts observed, that “the trials of persons accused of torture had only led to minor sanctions, even to conditional sentences, despite the severe penalties laid down in the penal Code”. They then wanted to know why lawyers were not always present during police interrogations, even though their presence was provided by law.
With regard to the social crisis in the North-west and South-west regions, the Cameroonian delegation to the United Nations indicated that it originated from corporate claims emanating from certain teachers ‘ and lawyers ‘ unions. These claims were deported to the political field a few months later with the violent claim of the partition of Cameroon by a secessionist current.
The delegation subsequently insisted that the corporate claims that led to the English crisis had given way to a genuine armed insurrection aimed at the division of the country and accompanied by violence against people and property. At least one hundred dead are to be deplored on 1 October, said the delegation, “notes the report.
