In a press release signed October 6, 2017, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Bamenda, Prof. Theresia Nkuo-Akenji, the University's doors would be opened on Monday, October 9, 2017, for the start of the 2017/2018 academic year, starting with the registration of new students.
This press release was coming about a month after the Minister of higher education, Jean Fami Ndongo, suspended the reopening of the University of Buea to an unknown date, due to the socio--political crises rocking the two regions, South West and North West.
Considering the above ministerial reason, and that the crises in the two english-speaking regions has escalated to a level where people are taking refuge in the bushes and in other french-speaking regions, many are doubting if there will be a smooth school resumption at the University. Other reasons for doubtful school resumption is the fact that the majority of the population, in view of the September 22 protest and October 1st independence restoration, believe in an interim government in exile, which for now specially also considering that the separatist group is still on a no school resumption and ghost towns program.
Furthermore, the town, like most others in Southern Cameroons is still very heavily militarized, and continuous arrest still continue to create panic in the people of this region.
